Why did classmates using ChatGPT score higher than those who didn't?

It’s really unfair how my honest effort scored lower than a classmate’s work that was obviously created by ChatGPT. Just before our assignment deadline, my peer submitted work that was clearly from ChatGPT and got full marks. Meanwhile, my own work, which I did without such tools, scored less. I could instantly recognize the ChatGPT style in my classmate’s submission. Our university has rules against using ChatGPT and requires us to submit our work to Turnitin. Don’t the lecturers recognize work done by AI?

It seems like you all used some kind of AI help. What do you mean by ‘Chat GPT like tools’? It’s not fair or right to use AI tools especially if the rules forbid it. You should rely on your own work or get help from people like teachers or tutors, which will actually improve your skills.

@Donna
Tools like Grammarly, which are somewhat accepted, can be helpful but should be limited. I can usually spot a ChatGPT submission because it lacks deep analysis. It might pick out themes, but it falls short on comparative analysis, which is essential in academic work.

@Scofield
ChatGPT isn’t capable of higher-level thinking like comparisons because it doesn’t actually think. It’s good at generating descriptions based on data, but it can’t handle complex analytical tasks.

@vinincent
That’s why I tailor my prompts to force it to attempt comparisons. Those who use it to cheat probably don’t know how to manipulate it effectively to produce high-quality work.

@Donna
Perhaps I wasn’t clear, but at some point, we might all use AI like ChatGPT responsibly. I admit I used it too, but only to help understand concepts, not to do the entire assignment. It’s concerning that teachers can’t spot work fully generated by AI.

@Bright
I’m a college student and have never used ChatGPT for my assignments. I’m here to actually learn.

Sometimes you have to game the system if the system itself is flawed.

It’s definitely not fair. Perhaps the lecturer isn’t aware that ChatGPT was used. If grades are curved and your grade is affected, it’s worth discussing this with your lecturer. Suggesting more stringent checks like requiring draft submissions and annotated bibliographies might encourage more rigorous academic integrity.

@dominic
My work wasn’t perfect, but seeing a ChatGPT-generated assignment score perfectly is disheartening. I’m planning to discuss this with my lecturer to highlight how it impacts students who try to work honestly.

@Bright
What are you really learning if you rely on AI? Mastering the subject matter is essential, and using AI doesn’t help you truly understand or improve your skills.

@Bright
If the grading is curved, you have every right to challenge the fairness of the assessment. Your academic future is important and worth protecting.

@dominic
Can you use ChatGPT to create a research plan, annotated bibliography, and rough draft? Then, simulate peer review comments for revisions.

While that’s a complex way to cheat, if someone’s determined to cheat, they’ll find a way. It undermines the value of genuinely learning the material.

@dominic
But it still doesn’t replace the actual learning process, which is critical.

I make my students complete their work in class to avoid this kind of issue.

That might be harder to manage at a university level, but it’s a good strategy.

If I were teaching at a university, I’d try to implement similar policies.

Unless students demand higher standards and consequences for cheating, things won’t change. Professors can’t tackle every case without solid proof, and accusations can lead to serious consequences for the accuser.

Report them. You only live once!
