Why are interviews and applications required to join so many groups in college?

With the exception of the top fire students, most engineering groups at my school, such as FSAE and the rocket team, were closed to outside members. It was difficult to join numerous social clubs as well. You really couldn’t investigate it in college (or even high school, but that’s an other story) because it was so bad.

Though frustrating it might be, there are a few reasons why interviews and applications are often required:

  • Ensuring commitment: Many groups, especially those involved in complex projects require a significant time commitment. Interviews help ensure that members are genuinely interested and willing to dedicate the necessary time and effort.
  • Skill assessment: For technical and competitive teams, it is important to have members with the right skills. Interviews and applications help assess whether potential members have the necessary background and expertise to contribute effectively.
  • Team dynamics: Group projects often require good teamwork and collaboration. Interviews can help determine if a candidate will fit well with the existing team dynamics and culture.
  • Resource management: Some groups have limited resources, such as equipment, funding, or space. By selecting members through an application process, they can manage these resources more effectively and ensure they are used by those who can make the most of them.
  • Quality control: For competitive teams and prestigious clubs, maintaining a high standard is crucial. Applications and interviews help maintain the quality and reputation of the group by selecting the best candidates.
