What's your idea of the perfect school calendar and weekly schedule?

@Teddy
Six weeks off in the winter would be rough! Winter means short days and staying inside. I’d rather keep summer long when we can actually get out and do things.

On the other hand, fewer drives in the snow could be a good thing. You’d still get a summer break too.

@Dexter
Where I live, snow days are common from January to March.

We get snow too, and I agree maybe a schedule could be adapted to different regions.

@Dexter
Winter still means keeping my 6-year-old entertained indoors, which gets expensive. Summer lets us go outside for free activities like parks and lakes. Two weeks in winter is plenty!

We don’t have many indoor options here, but we manage with sledding, baking, and crafts. Cozy winter days aren’t so bad.

@Dexter
Some days are great, but six weeks? We’d go stir-crazy! In summer, we’re out from morning till night.

But think of the travel options during those winter weeks!

@Teddy
We’d love to, but travel costs money and we have pets. Not really an option.

And winter travel isn’t fun if you’re facing bad weather.

Hey, winter travel can be awesome with the right gear. Guess it depends on what you’re used to!

Travel is only fun if we can escape the cold. Otherwise, we’re just braving Wisconsin winters, lol.

Year-round sounds best. Let everyone have Thanksgiving week and two weeks in winter off, and teachers could get one day for planning and collaboration each week.

Sounds great! Or maybe just do a half-day on Fridays.

This schedule would let parents arrange appointments on the weekday off, reducing missed school time.

@VAL09
Only if it’s staggered across the district—if everyone’s off on the same day, it’d be hard to get appointments. Our high school’s late start on Wednesdays fills up quick!

Our district discussed a 4-day week with one day for planning, but it seemed like a lot of non-teaching time. I can’t imagine that much in-service!

@Tracy
In my ideal version, it’d be 5 hours of prep and 2 hours for meetings. We’d lose prep on regular days, though, which wouldn’t work for all schools.

I prefer a long summer break for a true end-of-year feel, with plenty of time for family, camps, sports, and travel. But I’d like 4-day weeks with longer days—it’d be easier to unwind and make appointments without cutting into school.

Hello from Texas! A year-round calendar would be amazing. No one’s enjoying the outdoors here when it’s 105 every day.
