Hey everyone, I recently heard about something called an IEP, but I’m not entirely sure what it means. A friend’s child might need one at school, and I want to be supportive, but I’m a bit lost. Can someone explain what an IEP is? Is it just another type of school plan, or is there more to it? When would a student need an IEP?
It stands for Individualized Education Plan. It’s a legal document with many parts, such as: a summary of your brother’s disability and how it affects his school performance, his current academic levels, health information; academic goals and how they will be measured; special instructions/strategies for his teachers on how to help him learn in the classroom; and if he will need to be pulled out for extra support during school time.
Hello- you’ll want to go in with your concerns & ideas around how his ADHD impacts him educationally, & what accommodations can be put in place to allow him to access his education.
You can request an IEE -independent education evaluation - to have more knowledge on what your brothers needs are. It might be more than ADHD. everything must be done in writing. Get to know the laws. It might be to early but you can search for IEP advocates in your area just in case they don’t agree with accommodations. Best of luck…
An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is a customized educational plan designed for students with special needs. It outlines specific educational goals, services, and accommodations tailored to the student’s unique learning needs and abilities, ensuring they receive appropriate support to succeed academically and socially within the school environment.
Individualized Educational Plan. Every Sped student has one. This includes adjustments for examinations and normal class, when they will receive assistance, whether additional services are required (speech, hearing, etc.), and learning objectives.
IEP stands for Individualised Education Plan. It includes the student’s needs and strengths, as well as any legal modifications that should be made to help them learn. This accommodation must be supported by a healthcare practitioner and approved by a school board representative. Once in place, teachers are legally obligated to observe it.
