We teach multiplication poorly in America

Hello, I want to start by saying:

A) I’m not a teacher (but my partner is)

B) I’m neurodivergent, which may affect my perspective.

I think teaching multiplication tables is a poor introduction to complex math concepts.

For example, memorizing 7x9 (63) is easy, but 17x12 requires traditional long multiplication, which isn’t quick. I struggled with tables but understood math better by using principles, like 7x10-7=63.

Using this method, I can quickly solve 12x19 by doing 12x20-12=228. This approach helps in understanding fundamentals, making algebra easier later on. I’d love to hear your thoughts, as my partner avoids math despite being a teacher.

Hey,students, hear this, efforts are being made to enhance the teaching of multiplication. Some schools are adopting more hands-on methods and emphasizing the understanding of multiplication concepts instead of solely relying on memorization.

Automatically is a key aspect of mathematical learning, but we must acknowledge that it fails at some point.
