Seeking Software to Track Medical Trainees' Assignment Completion

Hello all,

I’m developing a curriculum for medical trainees at a university that lacks a robust Learning Management System (LMS) for tracking the completion of core competencies. Each trainee must complete a predetermined list of learning cases, all of which are marked as ‘incomplete’ at the start and must be completed by the end of their training.

I need software that allows our educators to easily mark these cases as complete, ideally through a user-friendly interface. We’ve tried using Airtable, but it doesn’t support tracking individual completions effectively. I’m open to both budget-friendly solutions and investments in paid software that meets our needs. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

For tasks that need completion confirmation, most LMS systems should allow manual marking in their grade books, even for assignments that are submitted. This could be used to track task completion.

Unfortunately, our current LMS (Sakai) is quite limited and doesn’t offer the necessary permissions for departmental staff to efficiently mark or release grades. The tasks we need to complete are similar to assignments and require departmental approval. Given the limitations of Sakai, I am seeking external tools that could either be a DIY solution like using Excel or a specialized database program, or potentially a paid software alternative.

@LucyPiper
The university will soon transition to Brightspace, which may address some of these issues, but that’s still a year away from being implemented.

@LucyPiper
It sounds like you need a system where teachers manually confirm student completions. Have you considered setting up a simple tracking system using Google Sheets?

How would that setup look in Google Sheets?

@LucyPiper
You could use Google Sheets to create a table with each student’s name and a list of tasks. Each task could have a checkbox or a dropdown menu to update its status. This setup allows for easy adjustments and visual progress tracking.

I work with a comprehensive LMS based in Singapore that might suit your needs. Would you be open to discussing it further in a direct message?

Consider exploring Moodle. It’s an open-source LMS that’s highly customizable and could be adapted to meet your specific needs for tracking and managing student completions.

While Moodle offers extensive features, it can be complex to set up and maintain.

@CathyGenesis
Despite its complexity, Moodle’s robust functionality might outweigh the initial setup challenges, especially with its built-in features for detailed role management and assignment tracking.

Sakai can be configured to effectively track competencies with proper setup at the outset of your course design. Here’s a guide on integrating outcomes in Sakai assessments.

I recommend checking out Chamilo, a lightweight and user-friendly LMS that’s free and open-source. It might provide the tracking capabilities you need without the overhead of more complex systems like Moodle.

Look into Screenpipe, an AI-enhanced tool that records screens and microphones, offering another level of tracking and compliance for educational tasks.
