Seeking Software to Track Assignment Completion for Medical Trainees

Hello everyone,

I’m developing a curriculum for our medical trainees, and we need a system to track the completion of core competencies, as our current university-affiliated LMS lacks robust tracking features. Each student needs to complete a set list of learning cases, starting as ‘incomplete’ and marked ‘complete’ upon finishing their training. I’m looking for software that provides an intuitive interface for teachers to easily mark these completions. Solutions like Airtable haven’t met our needs as they do not track individual completions across different users. Any suggestions for software that could help would be greatly appreciated.

Most LMS platforms should allow you to mark quizzes and assignments as complete. If it’s an assignment submission, this can typically be tracked as ‘submitted’ to indicate completion.

Our current LMS is based on Sakai, which has limited permissions for departmental staff to mark or release grades. The tasks are not typical quizzes or assignments but are more like practical objectives that need departmental sign-off. I’m exploring external options to manage this effectively, possibly using a DIY solution like Excel or a database program, or a paid service if not too expensive.

Your university is transitioning to Brightspace in over a year, which might resolve some of these issues.

Yes, we are transitioning to Brightspace, but it will take a while before it’s available to us.

Are you looking for a system where teachers can manually check off each completion?

Exactly, I need a system where completion is authenticated by a teacher, not automatically by the system.

@Alex
You might consider using Google Sheets for this purpose. It allows for custom statuses via drop-down menus and checkboxes.

Can you provide a basic setup example for using Google Sheets in this way?

@Alex
Certainly! Set up a spreadsheet with a row for each student and a column for each task. Use drop-down menus or checkboxes to change the status of each task. You can even add conditional formatting to color-code the status for easier visibility.

I work with a widely-used LMS here in Singapore that might meet your needs. Would you like me to contact you with more information?

Have you considered Moodle? It’s an open-source LMS that’s highly customizable and could be adapted to track the specific competencies you’re looking to monitor.

While Moodle has extensive capabilities, its setup and maintenance can be quite complex without technical expertise.

@Noah
While that’s true, Moodle’s flexibility might be worth the initial setup effort, especially with its capabilities for detailed role management and course customization.

Sakai can be configured to track competencies, but it requires proper setup at the beginning of your course design. Here’s a guide on setting up outcomes in Sakai: How to I add multiple parts to an assessment?

You might want to look into Chamilo, an open-source LMS that’s user-friendly and lighter than Moodle. It covers all the basic tracking features you might need. Here’s where you can try it: https://campus.chamilo.org/

Consider using https://screenpi.pe/, an AI-driven tool that records screens and microphones, and can track student activity effectively.
