Seeking Alternatives to Quizlet for Privacy-Compliant Educational Tools

I’m in search of an alternative to Quizlet that offers a data privacy agreement compatible with student access requirements. Knowt is the only option I’ve found that has a privacy agreement, but it is not ideal due to the disruptive ads and pop-ups. Does anyone know of any other alternatives that might meet these criteria?

Have you looked into Quizizz or Blooket as possible alternatives?

I recommend Quizizz. It now includes a flashcard mode, AI features available for free if five teachers from your school sign up, and a ‘Paper Mode’ similar to Plickers for offline responses using a printed QR code. It has a comprehensive resource bank too.

Thanks for the suggestion! I wasn’t aware of the flashcard mode in Quizizz. I’ll explore it. Blooket’s free version seems too limited, but I’ll give it a closer look.

I’m on the Knowt team and wanted to address your concerns. If we sign a privacy agreement with your school, your students will see no ads. We’re open to feedback to improve your experience. Feel free to reach out to us at schools@knowt.com.

Quizlet does have a privacy policy, which can be found here: https://quizlet.com/privacy.

True, but our district requires compliance with a national standard policy that Quizlet currently does not meet. These vendor-written policies often prioritize vendor protection over student data security.

Could you specify which national standard you’re referring to?

Privacy agreements are different from privacy policies as they specifically outline data handling practices, data destruction policies, and liabilities in case of data breaches. These are designed to comply with state statutes and a recognized national standard, which you can find more about at the Student Data Privacy Consortium: https://privacy.a4l.org/

Exactly, my role involves ensuring any tool we use complies with these stringent student data privacy requirements, beyond basic privacy policies.

Finding a full replacement for Quizlet can be challenging. In Illinois, using Quizlet without student logins (as guests) tends to comply with the guidelines, though it’s not ideal for monitoring or managing student interactions.

Thanks for sharing your approach. It’s helpful!

You might consider CK-12 Adaptive Practices, especially if you’re focusing on science and math. They adhere to privacy standards and offer a robust adaptive learning platform. You can review their privacy commitment and explore their offerings here: Privacy Pledge and Adaptive Practice.

Quizlet’s student pass feature might work for your needs. It allows students to use the service without individual logins.

I’m not familiar with the student pass. Does it function like a join code that bypasses the need for student logins?

@Washington
Yes, that’s exactly how it works. You can find this option at the top of any Quizlet flashcard set page.
