Reviews on Criterion-Referenced vs. Norm-Referenced Assessments

Hi everyone,

I’m conducting research on different types of educational assessments and I’m particularly interested in understanding the pros and cons of criterion-referenced versus norm-referenced assessments. If you have experience with either or both, I’d love to hear your insights! Here are a few specific questions I have:

  1. Definition and Purpose: How do these two types of assessments differ in terms of their definition and purpose?
  2. Effectiveness: Which type of assessment do you find more effective for evaluating student performance and why?
  3. Application: In what contexts or educational settings are each type of assessment most beneficial?
  4. Student Impact: How do these assessments impact students, both positively and negatively?

Thanks in advance…

Norm: Think of “normal.” Scores are reported based on what has been normal or average before. For example, an IQ test shows how you compare to the average.

Criterion: Think of “criteria.” This is a specific goal or standard that needs to be met.
