I’m interested in understanding what distinguishes a great educator from the rest. What qualities, skills, or attributes are essential for making a significant impact in the classroom? How can educators develop these traits to enhance their effectiveness and inspire their students?
I disagree with quite a few of the items on this list, which is really bad.
Subject expertise is the most important factor, in my opinion, and I teach in foreign schools in Asia.
Currently teaching at one of the “best” international schools in Asia, subject knowledge is still the most important factor; ability will likely come in second. Due to the nature of the international education system, most teachers are generally less skilled than those in their native countries.
Classroom management would be a top priority if I were a teacher back home, however it obviously depends on the school.
A great educator? It’s someone who really cares. Like, they don’t just teach, they connect. They listen, understand, and make learning feel less like a chore and more like an adventure. I had a teacher once who just got me, and that made all the difference. They were patient, real, and super encouraging. Skills? Sure, but it’s more about heart. You can always learn to be better, but the best start with caring.
My top three would be: Sound decision making skills under pressure. Proactive rather than reactive. Empathy.
A truly exceptional educator blends natural talent with developed skills.
