People in EdTech, what do you actually do all day?

Hey, I’ve been teaching in Asia for 20 years, mainly with the IB diploma. I’ve held nearly every leadership position, and I’m getting bored. I could move into full-on administration (I’m in my 6th year as an IBDC), but the only appealing thing there is the salary.

So, I’ve been looking into EdTech. I’ve never worked at a school with an EdTech person, so I was wondering what career paths exist in EdTech. I’m currently working on a master’s degree and thinking of specializing in EdTech. Any insights would be great—thanks!

I work for a company that creates online courses for a university. If you’re familiar with learning theories, classroom experience, and tools like iSpring, Articulate Storyline, Rise, or LMS platforms like Moodle or Google Classroom, it’s a good job.

I work from home, attend meetings, get paid well, and have a good work/life balance. My role is called ‘Learning Experience Designer,’ but there are also ‘Instructional Designers.’

Hope this helps!

@Terry
I’m also an instructional designer working with universities. Mind if I DM you to connect further?

@Terry
Can I ask what the salary range is?

@Terry
How did you get into this?

I deal with the customers so the engineers don’t have to. I have people skills! I’m good at dealing with people. WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?!

Just get me those TPS reports on my desk, too!

I left EdTech a few years ago but worked in content creation and software development. We created curriculum, designed content around that, and wrote specs for design and software requirements. We produced video content, but the actors weren’t teachers, which sometimes made it less effective. Finding teachers who could also act was tough.

Authoring is a big part of EdTech, and teachers who know how to create engaging curricula are highly valued.

@helon
I’m a teacher and an actor! Hire me :joy:

I love teaching and acting too! Where can I find roles that combine both?

Look for jobs as an instructional designer or curriculum developer. Some roles require acting or video skills, especially for EdTech companies or educational content creators. There are also opportunities in MOOCs, test prep companies, and EdTech apps.

If you’re serious about it, check job listings for any software skills you’re missing (like Adobe Captivate) and see which EdTech companies are in your area. On-site roles tend to have less competition than remote jobs.

It sounds like you’re a bit confused about what EdTech is. Schools don’t typically have ‘EdTech guys.’ EdTech is an industry, while schools might have IT staff or technology coaches.

Our schools have EdTech teacher developers.

@Alex1
They’re usually called tech coaches or learning technology facilitators. I used to work in that role.

I’m an EdTech integration specialist, which is pretty similar to those roles.

I work for an EdTech company that helps students prepare for competitive exams. We’re a tech company solving problems related to exam prep. I’m a full-stack product designer, so I design user flows, monetization flows, and the UI for our app and web platforms.

Besides our design team, we have teachers who create content, developers, testers, data analysts, marketing, and more. There are both B2C and B2B EdTech companies, and each offers different opportunities depending on the type of work you’re looking for.

Hey, can you recommend any training courses that would help me get into a role like yours?

I didn’t take any specific training courses for this job. I graduated from a design school and got lucky with an interview. Knowledge of UX design is important, and you can find many free or paid courses for that. Having a strong portfolio and real-world experience (even internships) is also helpful. You’ll learn the domain as you work.

I worked in EdTech for 4 years in enrollment and marketing management at an OPM (Online Program Management). My day was filled with meetings, reviewing spreadsheets, overseeing teams, and dealing with endless decision delays.

EdTech is brutal right now. Several big companies, like 2U and Noodle, are restructuring or facing big challenges. It’s a tough industry right now, especially in OPM.

I’m in EdTech sales and success leadership, mostly focused on LMS and SIS platforms.

On the success side, we optimize support operations to keep customers happy and renewing their contracts. Good support means better retention.

On the sales side, we attend events, handle technical demos, and identify schools that fit our product. It’s a mix of meetings, demos, and managing the team. 100% remote work, great pay, and solid work/life balance.
