International Baccalaureate Primary Years VS State Common Core Standards, Which one is better?

If you had a chance to choose one of these to implement as a teacher which would it be?

Imagine yourself as a parent of an elementary-age student, which curriculum would you prefer?

My kindergartener is in a situation where things might go either way, so I would love to get some advice and insight from professionals like you guys. Regards!

IB for primary years is not a curriculum. This is because it is more of a guiding philosophy. In normal circumstances, schools will use a traditional curriculum at the same time providing the “what”.

This is a pure lie or rather misinformation because my kids go to an IB school and their math lessons are definitely common core aligned.

Thanks for this information. It has enlightened me because I don’t have a background in education, so I never realised what the distinction is. In your opinion, is IB better than Common Core standards?

They are not the same thing. The reason is that both get used at the same time in primary years. Students must be in the IB diploma program before the IB becomes a stand-alone curriculum, and that does not happen until they are teenagers.

The IB PYP provides a framework for teaching them, not a set of standards. In my PYP classroom, we undoubtedly continued to teach state standards. It’s not a binary decision.

I will choose IB with no question of course with an assumption that the schools/instructors are of similar quality.

I believe that the integration of local norms was permitted by IB. Even though I only taught MYP and DP, I managed to incorporate the science requirements.

Neither of them seems to be a curriculum, in my opinion. They are instructional strategies. As long as there is support and sound structures in place, either approach can be effective. Regardless of the structure the school uses, every teacher has a unique style of instruction.

If you have any questions, you should inquire about the kinds of teaching methods and school regulations that they employ. Is that school a PBIS? Do they employ GLAD tactics? Do they practice six-step phonics? Inquire as to the precise kinds of educational resources and guidelines they intend to use.

In comparison to the way the school is conducted, simply throwing around terms like “Common Core” or “International Baccalaureate Primary Years” doesn’t signify that much.

My top three goals for kindergarten would be:

  1. a reading curriculum centred on phonics.
  2. the maximum amount of play and recess time.
  3. an appreciation of fine arts like music and art.

It really doesn’t matter. You have no idea how your child will react to any of this. In a similar vein, you may have high expectations for your child’s future and they may not want or be able to study hard enough to get into the best universities.

Universities won’t ultimately decide to weight a school lower because it was a CC school; instead, a variety of factors, such as extracurricular activities, poorly written essays that no one reads, films, etc., will play a role.
