Hello, can someone please explain how school sports work in the US? We just moved here and have a 12-year-old and an 8-year-old, and I’d like to sign them up for some sports activities through school. How does it work? Is it expensive, and who should I ask? I’m not sure where to start, and I want my kids to socialize with their age group on weekends. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
It is different everywhere. I teach elementary school, and my district offers certain sports for a fee of around $35. There are additional groups in town that children can join; however, these are more expensive. The local YMCA typically has teams.
Middle and high school typically have more school-related sports teams.
Go to a few drop-off/pick-up locations and begin questioning other parents. Check out your local parks and recreation. Go to your nearest park. If you observe children participating in a sport that interests you, ask other parents about it.
A fast Google search for your area will reveal community and club teams. In my experience, club teams are more competitive and pricier than community teams. Growing up, the two kids participated in at least five different sports.
