Because guys com’n it is not just about typing speed, looking at the keyboard while typing is a major distraction for even adults nowadays.
The simple reason is that the guys up there making decisions think that children are digital natives and don’t even at a second realize that children aren’t millennials anymore. The students nowadays are computer illiterate and nobody making decisions knows it.
In addition to your concern, I am concerned that a lot of districts have dropped their specials or electives. My home district doesn’t have even a tech/computer class like I did in school.
As a school, we decided to have a typing club subscription and try to incorporate typing into regular assignments but it should be more. Especially when they require us to take all testing online.
Our students actually love it, but mostly because they are amazed that some teachers can type quickly without looking. They think it is easier but forget that it requires regular learning.
I am 25 years old and we had touch typing classes when I was a student. Unfortunately, the classes didn’t help me because I had already learned my style of typing so I was never concerned about their “correct” method.
Kids now all know how to type but their typing skills are poor unfortunately.
This is a valid concern because my middle school students think that I am some type of superman just for being able to type quickly without looking at the keyboard.
They just forget that for any skill to be a norm they need to practice it severally.
Don’t you know that it is commonly taught in tech classes in Elementary schools? Every school I have been in has had some sort of typing curriculum which included touch typing.
I think the reason might be keyboarding isn’t fun to teach at all. Rote memorization is no fun for the teacher, compared to open-ended discussions, so it many teachers just skip it.
I just asked our principal this question today; How are kids taking high-stakes standardized testing since they are in 3rd grade, and no one gives them a typing class? He just looked at me clicked and went for lunch. This left me wondering up to this moment.
I am not a teacher but sadly, teachers are too busy preparing students to handle problems that don’t yet exist that they cannnot work on those that exist right now.
I know must of you guys are teachers but don’t crucify me yet am just sharing my mind.
The present kids won’t do it. Several schools I have been at have tried. These kids just think they are computer whizzes naturally and refuse to learn it. They simply believe they ahve got it nailed.
