Improving a Child's Reading Capabilities

Hi there. My niece’s writing and reading comprehension are appalling. I refer to her recurrent rereading of a sentence as having poor reading skills. How can she make things better?

I recommend that you make it a habit to read books, newspapers, and other publications. Do whatever you want with your free time. After all, practice makes a guy perfect! If you want to improve something, you must practice it over and over.

I’ve been through a similar situation with a younger relative struggling with reading and writing. From my experience, a good approach is to start with reading comprehension exercises that are age-appropriate and engaging. Encourage regular, short reading sessions with books she enjoys and use tools like vocabulary lists and reading comprehension questions. Also, practicing writing by summarizing what she reads can help reinforce understanding. If she’s struggling a lot, it might be helpful to seek additional support from a tutor or educational specialist who can tailor strategies to her needs.
