If you had the ability, what changes would you make to American higher education?

I will just put my thoughts in a separate comment.

I just wanted to hear some opinions, since I see a lot of discussion about how to fix the lower education system (K-12), but comparatively less regarding university education. Lemme know what you think.

The first thing I must do is to reduce the salary for top executives and make sure the faculty and staff are paid properly for a change.

It is sad to note that currently, even grad students are making below the local minimum wage. It is even better to work off campus if you like money more than work.

I will just better the worker’s rights for employees. In addition, I will also fix the overage of administration.

There should be some sort of warranty of employment so that no one should leave college in debt that does not lead to a career path immediately. Normally we are made to that it is the student’s responsibility to achieve but personally, I believe it is the schools to guide them.

The school ought to offer programs to help retrain. For instance, the medical sciences change priorities very quickly, you could be studying what is in demand now, and by the time you graduate or shortly after they would want something else.

We cannot put the sports toothpaste back in its tube. If billions are being made, the athletes themselves should get a piece of that pie.

The focus of college should be outputting well-learned citizens who are primed to succeed.

My first thing to do is to introduce a mandatory high-stakes national exam to graduate from high school and rank high school students so that community colleges won’t be forced to deal with almost the whole student body being years behind where they are supposed to be and all colleges could have a way to objectively understand applicants’ abilities.

If maybe I get the position in the public sector, I would stop the never ending campus expansion in public institutions.

I would also make sure that the institutions provide an adequate education for a reasonable cost for in-state students and also stop chasing foreign and out of state students.

Finally, I would scale back sports programs, especially those that employ professional athletes.

I would just get rid of the paywall. Just imagine that in Europe college is free, and some countries even pay you to get an education

While on the other hand here in America education is expensive because it doesn’t want you to get one.

I wish this dream comes true because I think there should be laws against the abusive labor inflicted upon part-time faculty. In case universities offer multiple faculty part-time jobs, then they should be forced to create more full-time jobs instead. It is sad to say that some have about 80% of classes taught by temporary, part-time faculty.

It is unfair that jobs requiring such a high level of education don’t pay and benefit more. Then, to piece together full-time work with poor pay and no benefits, these folks wind up working as part-time teachers at three or four universities.

Furthermore, because there is a disproportionate amount of work that only full-time or tenure-track employees can complete, there are fewer people with whom to share the workload, which leads to an imbalance in workload for full-time professors as well. I was once on 9 committees because there were only two tenured people in my department.

I must high school entrance exam although it will be opposed highly :grinning: :grinning: :grinning:. This will tell kids that if they are not prepared for college they should learn a trade or skill that will get them a job.

I will just make sure that the students’ and the admins’ welfare are well catered for.

I will make education accessible. Community college only gets you so far and then geography and money become real hurdles for a significant number of people.

In addition, I will quit hiring adjuncts for every class and then paying adjuncts an abusive wage. Adjuncts are an incredible resource to make education more accessible. Quit profiting off their labor while bloated middle management siphoned off all the tuition and fees. I will then put the money where it matters. Faculty and tools, not amenities and associate deans.

I will just change the hiring policy and hire good teachers and pay them more. In addition, I will make learning the responsibility of the students.

Teachers will only teach verified facts, I will do away with school voucher programs, and finally only use public funds for public schools.
