I love teaching and am considering pursuing it as a hobby... What are my options?

I’ve always dreamed of opening my own school, but I’m not sure if I should pursue this path. I’m thinking about starting small to test if I truly have a knack for teaching or if it’s just a fleeting interest.

Dreaming about opening a school is a lot like dreaming of playing in the NHL before you’ve laced up your skates for the first time. Like, go for it and chase your dream, but maybe start small. Teaching is a demanding job and requires a significant commitment of time and energy.

If you know any teachers, see if you can volunteer in their classroom for a few days. This will help you understand if this is the life you can picture for yourself.

Why not try being a substitute teacher? Maybe even teach a Sunday school class?

You want to teach as a hobby and open a school? What qualifications do you have? Have you taught before? What makes you think you can run an entire school?

Teaching is not just a hobby.

What subjects would you teach? If you’re really interested in starting a school, there are actually colleges that are up for sale. You could buy one.

Identify your area of expertise and start offering lessons on that subject.

Volunteer at an after-school program where you can tutor in subjects you’re passionate about and skilled in. Be prepared for a lot of patience, as some kids may struggle to understand, show little interest, or have special needs. You need to adapt quickly and handle different situations.

Consider volunteering in tutoring programs at public libraries or becoming a substitute teacher.

Teaching adults who haven’t learned to read can be very rewarding. I’m a state-certified teacher and tutor such adults at a non-profit Adult Literacy Program. You don’t need to be a teacher to help; just be willing to learn effective teaching methods. To get involved, search for ‘adult literacy programs’ in your area.

What are your teaching qualifications? If you have an advanced degree, you could consider adjunct teaching.

Please reconsider your plan.

I’m curious why my comment explaining why teaching is more than a hobby was downvoted. Teaching demands attention to detail. Mistakes by teachers, even if well-intentioned, can lead to widespread misinformation.

Try substitute teaching to see if it suits you.

Consider teaching extracurricular activities at a local college.

I wouldn’t recommend it.

Create educational materials and sell them on platforms like Teachers Pay Teachers, or design a course for Outschool.

Running a business or school requires a different skill set than teaching. Specializing in one or trying to do both is challenging.

It’s hard to advise without knowing more about your background, but exploring tutoring or adult literacy programs might be good starting points. Many schools offer these programs, and volunteering could give you valuable experience.

This forum could be used as a teaching tool. It would allow students to develop their ideas and express themselves effectively, potentially even anonymously for grading purposes.
