I am just wondering why is manual writing (printing or cursive) still taught in primary schools when you can get by with only typing nowadays

Is it because they wanna develop fine motor skills? If yes, maybe they could be developed in a way that doesn’t involve writing.

You are joking, right? Because no serious citizen can ask this question.

I will just give you one reason which is pens, pencils, crayons and chalk, and a place to write, are far cheaper and don’t constantly cause eye stress as is the case with electronics. I hope you have now gotten sense behind it.

Although technology is advancing, there are still important documents like personal checks and contracts that require a written signature. It is sad every year during parent conferences when a kid can barely print his initials on the form, after being coached.

This is the kind of question that makes to not always blame the government for everything that this nation currently has. This is because, with this kind of thinking, we will never move forward as a nation.

The main reason why I will encourage manual writing is the fact that with AI becoming a problem concerning academic honesty, handwriting assessments will be way more common for authentic assessments.

Paper remains a “screen.” Early instruction is necessary to develop fine motor skills and proper letter formation, which are necessary for writing notes and completing graphic organizers. Writing down your notes by hand on paper is far more efficient than using a split screen or alternating between windows if you don’t have a dual monitor.

It is an unpopular opinion but I will say it regardless, after a decade and a half of being an educator students do not learn as well off of screens as they do when they create the words and images on a tangible surface. This is because writing on paper helps so much more than just motor skills. Learning the creative process in a way that simply cannot be done on a screen is beneficial. In addition, the pupils’ typing skills are lacking. A few of them are. Actually. Many more people simply aren’t adept typists, although a small number are.

I think the main reason why writing is effective is because there is an effect where you can make memorizing something easier by making it complicated like a ritual similar to “writing.” For instance, if you want to memorize say a poem, writing it down 10 times is more effective than typing it 10 times just simply because you use a lot more of your body parts, including eyes, nose, arms, fingers, back, stomach, legs, and even the mouth (if you are into biting pencils).

In addition, you should teach kids methods that are as independent of tech as possible.

There are many reasons for the same. They include:

  • Manual writing is still a very practical skill. I write by hand daily. Lots of people do. If you are not, you are missing out.
  • Writing letters by hand is one of the most efficient and effective ways to learn them. This is because it necessitates a far more thorough recall than simple recognition, resulting in more robust memory traces.
  • Handwriting offers numerous research-proven advantages over typing. Essentially, writing by hand allows you to remember more and demonstrate a better level of thought and creativity.
