High School Diploma (finished but missing credit) – School Culture & Policy

I finished high school back in 2021. I passed all my classes and even earned two extra credits beyond what was required. However, it turns out I was missing HALF a physical education credit. Because of this, I wasn’t awarded my diploma. I’ve been in contact with a person who handles these issues, but I’m struggling to figure out how to obtain this missing half P.E. credit to get my diploma.

I know I could pursue a GED, but I already completed high school, and I feel frustrated that I’m being denied my diploma over a credit issue that wasn’t even communicated to me at the time. Does anyone have any advice on what steps I can take to resolve this? Is there any way to get this diploma without having to go the GED route? I was living in New York when this happened but am now based in Atlanta.

Since you are a bit older, I think your best bet is to get your GED. The time to have brought this up was immediately after you completed your senior year.

You can contact the school district and ask them about credit-by-exam options.
I think from there you would get your way forward.

But the guy is older than the regular students. Therefore, it is arguable he cannot complete his high school diploma using high school credits.

The best option available in the table is to get their GED.

This must be a frustrating scenario for you after completing all your classes and even earning extra credits.

You can obtain your high school diploma without having to pursue a GED by exploring any of these options:

  • Contact your former high school: Reach out to the administration or the person handling your case at your former high school in New York. Explain your situation and ask if there are any options for completing the missing half of P.E. credit remotely or through an alternative method.
  • Online P.E. courses: Many accredited online schools offer P.E. courses that you can complete from anywhere. Check if your high school will accept credits from an online course to fulfill the requirement.
  • State Education Department: Contact the New York State Education Department for guidance. They may have specific policies or alternative pathways for students in your situation.
