Do you regret pursuing education?

I’m a freshman in college majoring in Photography/Media Arts and I’m having second thoughts about my career path. I haven’t started my major-specific classes yet, as all Fine Arts majors at my school take general art courses in their first year. I find this frustrating because these courses aren’t directly related to photography. I’m passionate about elementary education and have enjoyed tutoring in the past. I’m wondering if a career in education might be more fulfilling. I’d love to hear from educators: Do you regret your decision to pursue education, or has it been rewarding for you? Any insights would be greatly appreciated as I try to make this decision.

I don’t regret becoming a teacher. I left the education sector for two years but returned because I realized I value job security, the impactful nature of the job, and the dynamic environment that teaching offers. It’s not perfect, but it’s a job that feels meaningful at the end of the day.

Have you considered combining your passions? Teaching abroad could allow you to explore photography while also engaging in education. This could also be financially advantageous.

Teaching is exhausting but rewarding. It’s not something you can do half-heartedly. The connections with students and the ability to see them grow are incredibly fulfilling, despite the challenges.

Teaching, especially in middle school, is intense and demands a lot, but it’s also highly rewarding. The interactions with students, the ability to influence their lives, and the constant learning are unmatched in any other career I’ve had.

@Kathy
Hearing about your experiences really puts things into perspective for me, especially since I’ve had some positive interactions with kids in my tutoring job. Thank you for sharing!

It’s normal to feel uncertain, especially when your course work hasn’t yet touched on your major. Consider sticking it out until you start your photography classes. Education is always an option later on if photography doesn’t fulfill you.

While I loved teaching, I regret it because of the lack of flexibility and progression outside of the field. Consider this as you make your decision, especially if you value versatility in your career.

It’s completely okay to be unsure right now. You have time to explore both of your interests in photography and education before making a final decision.

Switching from finance to education was the best decision for me. It’s challenging but fulfilling to make a real difference.

I’ve managed to integrate my passion for film into my teaching career, which keeps my work exciting and creative. Consider how you might combine photography and education.

Teaching at elementary level was rewarding but also physically demanding, which led me to switch to teaching older students.

No regrets here, but it’s not for everyone. Consider all factors, including personal energy levels and career aspirations.

I plan to leave teaching due to the lack of respect and autonomy in the field, despite loving the teaching itself.

Leaving teaching was a relief for me; it wasn’t the right fit in the long run.

The variability in teaching experiences makes it hard to predict whether it’s the right path. It depends greatly on the school environment and personal preferences.

No regrets about pursuing education, it’s a fulfilling career if you’re passionate about it.

While teaching has its perks, I’m leaving the field for a better-paying job that allows more flexibility. Consider your long-term career and financial goals when choosing your path.

Teaching can be disempowering due to systemic constraints. Think about whether you want a career where you can have more control.

Teaching has been rewarding, but consider the practical aspects of your career choice. Photography doesn’t require a degree, so a business-focused degree might be more beneficial if you pursue that path.
