Do colleges and universities respect a GED the same as a high school diploma?

I’m considering getting my GED, but I’m worried it won’t be respected as much as a high school diploma. Do colleges and universities treat them equally, or could having a GED affect my chances of getting into a good school? Has anyone been through this process and can share their experience?
