I have a question in my application for linguistics that I am unable to answer. In order to study at this department, I have to take two languages: English and one of three languages—French, German, or Spanish. I’m not sure which option to choose. Any feedback? What in these languages should I look at? I’m leaning toward choosing French for now, but I’m not sure.

What city do you reside in? The most useful one is the one I would choose. Which one would you be able to apply in your local community?

Since I currently reside in Russia, I don’t believe any of them will be used in any way.

Then choose the one that most interests you—learning French is not too difficult!

Spanish is still useful, and Russia and Latin American nations likely still have some ties.

Isn’t German the most useful language to learn if you travel to Europe?

To give you a foundation in both Romance/Latin and Germanic languages (English), I would pick a Romance language. Therefore, French or Spanish would work, but since English will have a lot of French influence, Spanish would expose you to more foreign languages.
