Asking for Advice on Changing Careers

I’m looking to use my 20+ years of experience as an international consultant, specializing in global talent and organization development, to become an EdTech copywriter and content creator. I’ve worked a lot with employee assessments, designing programs for executive coaching and leadership development, and managing organizational change. Most of my experience is with Fortune 500 companies and Japanese multinational corporations. I’ve also written a variety of content, including case studies, white papers, opinion pieces, and marketing materials like website content, blogs, newsletters, and press releases. I’m now interested in finding startups that could benefit from my international experience.
Do you have any suggestions?

Instead of getting a full-time job, consider working as a part-time consultant for 4-5 startups. You can bill them hourly, giving you more flexibility and control over your schedule. This approach will also help you broaden your experience and grow your network quickly.

Thanks! This approach makes sense to me. I’ve looked into what consulting services are in demand, and I’m confident that I have the skills to add value in several areas.

EdTech startups are everywhere, with countless options across the country. Schools often choose them because they can focus on one specific area and, being small, they’re quick to adapt. You seem more than qualified if you’re interested in copywriting, but so far, you’ve only shared your resume.

However, it’s important to note that your past work experience might not always be the deciding factor, especially if you haven’t worked in education or a related field. For example, last week, I interviewed candidates for an analyst position. One was an experienced analyst who had led a data project that changed the compensation bonus structure for a Fortune 500 company. The other was an internal candidate with two years of teaching experience who also rebuilt our school district’s HR system from the ground up. Even though the first candidate had more experience, I recommended hiring the second one because he’s an educator and understands our needs better.

Thank you for your suggestions. I’m focusing on copywriting, content development, and brand consulting because, as an INTP, I burned out in a people-intensive practice. The parts I enjoyed most involved research, writing, and product design, as well as communicating complex topics across cultural and language barriers. I almost single-handedly built the executive coaching practices for three organizations, handling product design, marketing, and thought leadership, but eventually burned out on coaching. I’m now very interested in online coaching platforms and have contributed to the design of two such platforms. In short, I enjoy building products and communicating their value.
