A Florida teacher was investigated by the DeSantis administration for showing a Disney film

Hi guys,

A Florida teacher is under investigation by the state Department of Education, which she perceives as a targeted attack by a school board member over a Disney movie shown in her classroom. During a Hernando County School Board meeting on Tuesday, fifth-grade teacher Jenna Barbee claimed that school board member Shannon Rodriguez reported her to the DOE for showing Disney’s 2022 movie “Strange World,” notable for featuring Disney’s first openly gay character. The DeSantis culture war continues.

Who in this current era wants to be a teacher? It is a horrible job all around and I feel so bad for those who honestly want to teach and inspire the next generation.

Why talk bad about teachers? Do you realize that most guys in this forum are teachers? Why do you discourage people to be teachers yet you have or in future you will have kids. Who do you think will teach them?

Please for peace’s sake pull down the comment.

Don’t crucify someone for just speaking her thoughts. I personally I am a teacher and I always have anxiety attacks about saying or doing the wrong thing and being accused of it.

High school kids nowadays are not above lying to get a teacher in trouble, either. After over a decade of giving my all to the school system, I am considering retiring before I can even get the full pension, simply to rest from all this troubles.

I like my job because I have really passion for helping kids make it in life. But some of the stories I hear from other schools and even from my colleagues leave me dumbfounded.

For instance, just last year, my friend got in trouble with our principal for telling my student he was being rude and sending him to the office. It is no lie that you have to walk on eggshells around these kids nowadays I swear.

You know, my colleagues and I were recently sharing about how much more normal TV, ads, and movies are. Keep in mind that all content was never this bizarre, disorienting world composed solely of white, straight, suburban narratives. Of late, it is disgusting to see all races, gay couples, straight couples, single people.

It feels much more like normal out there now. Are companies doing this to sell crap? Maybe yes. At least we are not being treated like flaming, credulous morons living in some surreal, perennial Christian right eutopia. Still not quite there but wow is it less annoying?

Be thankful if kids could benefit. On the tax dollars paid by the entire population composed of the entire nation. Holy crap Florida.

I live in Florida and what I can say is that they are doing all of this to try and push people like you out of Florida so it can be turned into a 100% conservative wet dream

If only they had conducted this thorough inquiry on the allegations made by a male teacher at my school. It could have been fair enough. It required a federal CP investigation and two full years to get him fired

I am from New York State. And I am not ashamed to say that I never and will never acknowledge Florida at all. In Florida, if I had children, I would just homeschool them.

In my normal setup, I would have been more concerned about Disney pursuing me. Since purchasing and the mouse won’t work, technically presenting a movie to a class is not within the scope of the copyright. It is unbelievable to have it from both perspectives. It is a relief that movie days are no longer worthwhile. It is no longer exceptional and is ignored by some children although…

What if I surprised you that my local district purchases a Disney license? I am not sure about specifics, but they can display anything from the catalog available. And as if that is not enough, other schools only play Disney films since they are certain that the content is safe and that the license holder has it, such as on community movie night. Since I live in California, of course, we don’t have to worry about our children “catching gay” from a movie.

It is foolish of the district to enforce this position. As a fellow teacher, I hope this teacher wins at last. Would they be upset with the teacher if it were Bambi because it hurt those who lost their parents?

Having said that, the homosexual character in this film existed purely for commercial purposes. The main character’s preference for men added essentially nothing to the plot, and it would be inconsequential to the plot if they deleted a love interest—a man, a woman, an animal—anyway.

My thoughts though :grinning:

She broke the law now she must be punished, This woman who calls herself a teacher has declared publicly that parents have no rights to their children. She is a threat to anyone’s child and has no place in the school system.

She must go home and maybe she can teach her own children but not our children. Peried!

Does this seem like a joke to you?
Florida is trending because they are ignorant like you :rage:. How are you going to ask a question when the answer is literally the post you are commenting on?
